The American palm is mostly for decoration. In the 20th century, Los Angeles was decorated with palm trees to attract new residents to the city, and they were imported from all over the world, as only one type of palm tree is originally native to California. As the trees grew, Hollywood and the film industry made the palm trees an easily recognizable symbol of Los Angeles across the globe. Many of them are now unfortunately dying due to fungal attacks and invasive insects, so the city has begun to replace them with native and more robust woods.
