The level of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest reached its highest in 2019 in more than ten years with felling of 9,762 square kilometres between August 2018 and July 2019, according to the National Institute for Space Research. The Amazon is the world’s largest rainforest and is perceived as having a major impact on our climate change challenge, due to the large amounts of CO2 it absorbs. Major forest fires in Brazil, Peru and Bolivia are threatening the entire area and in recent years have sent the Amazon closer to drought and degeneration.
