The Asian maple is widespread throughout the continent and comes in many sub-varieties. The leaves can be both green or bright red and the tree prefers to grow in the undergrowth with shelter from other trees but requires six to eight hours of sun every day to thrive, but then it can also be up to 10 meters high. The leaves and branches are used, like so much else, diligently in traditional Chinese medicine.
